CP-180 Organoclay — Technical Data Sheet

White-powder organophilic clay optimized for diesel and low to intermediate polarity systems. Colorless, high-clarity gel. For paints and coatings, lubricating grease, adhesives, oil drilling mud, sealants, and putty. Requires polar activator. See also CP-180B (improved grade).

CP Organoclay organophilic clay powder — fine powder product for industrial applications
CP-180 is a white-powder organophilic clay designed for diesel oil systems and intermediate to low polarity solvent-based formulations. It produces a colorless, high-clarity thixotropic gel across a wide range of aliphatic, aromatic, and diesel solvent systems with reproducible consistency over temperature. CP-180B is the improved successor with finer particle size and easier dispersibility — both grades share the same specification range and application scope.

CP-180 vs CP-180B: CP-180B is the improved successor to CP-180 with finer particle size and easier dispersibility at equivalent mixing conditions. For new product development, specify CP-180B. CP-180 remains available for existing formulations where reformulation is not desired. Both grades share identical LOI range (29–32%) and require 30–40% polar activator.

Incorporation Method

  1. Prepare pre-gel: charge solvent, add CP-180 at 6–10% under agitation
  2. Disperse at high shear for 5 minutes
  3. Add polar activator: 95% ethanol at 30–40% of CP-180 weight
  4. Continue dispersion for 5 minutes; rest 10–15 minutes
  5. Incorporate pre-gel into full formulation

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CP-180 organoclay optimized for?
CP-180 is optimized for diesel oil systems and low to intermediate polarity solvents. White powder with colorless gel — suitable for light-tinted coatings, diesel OBM, and near-white adhesive/sealant formulations. Requires 30–40% polar activator. For new formulations, the improved successor CP-180B is recommended — finer particle size, easier dispersibility, same spec range.
What is the difference between CP-180 and CP-180B?
CP-180B is an improved grade: finer particle size, easier to disperse, more consistent thixotropy batch-to-batch. Both share LOI 29–32%, same applications (paints, grease, drilling mud, sealants), and 30–40% polar activator requirement. For new formulation development, specify CP-180B. CP-180 available for existing established formulations.
