CP-982 Organophilic Clay — Technical Data Sheet

Amine-treated organophilic clay viscosifier for oil-based drilling fluids and invert emulsion systems. Effective in diesel, mineral oil, and synthetic base fluids. Provides yield point, gel strength, cutting suspension, and emulsion stability at moderate well temperatures.

CP Organoclay organophilic clay powder — fine powder product for industrial applications
CP-982 is an amine-treated organophilic clay formulated as a cost-effective viscosifier and gellant for oil-based drilling fluids. Produced from high-quality sodium bentonite through controlled quaternary ammonium surface treatment, CP-982 develops effective yield point and gel structure in all-oil and invert emulsion systems where sufficient mixing shear is available. It provides reliable cutting transport, barite suspension, and fluid loss control across a range of base oil types at moderate downhole temperatures.

Temperature Range: CP-982 is rated for moderate-temperature applications up to approximately 120°C bottom-hole temperature. For wells with BHT of 120–180°C, use CP-EL or CP-GL (HTHP grades). For Arctic or sub-zero surface conditions, contact our technical team for activation and pre-hydration protocols.

Dosage and Rheology Guide

Target Yield Point (API)Typical CP-982 DosageMud Weight Range
5–10 Pa (light OBM)5–8 kg/m³1.0–1.4 g/cm³
10–18 Pa (standard OBM)8–12 kg/m³1.4–1.8 g/cm³
15–25 Pa (high-density OBM)12–15 kg/m³1.8–2.2 g/cm³

Values are indicative for diesel/mineral oil base fluid. Actual dosage depends on base oil type, shear history, temperature, and other additives present. Laboratory optimization recommended before field application.

Incorporation Method

  1. Add CP-982 to the base oil — add as a dry powder to the base oil before emulsifiers or other additives
  2. High-shear mixing required — disperse using a high-speed mixer or mud hopper at maximum available shear; CP-982 requires sufficient shear for full exfoliation and gel development
  3. Mix for minimum 15–20 minutes at high shear to ensure complete dispersion
  4. Add emulsifiers after CP-982 is fully dispersed
  5. Add water phase gradually while maintaining high shear to form stable invert emulsion
  6. Check rheology (yield point, gel strength, plastic viscosity) after mixing and before adding weighting material

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CP-982 organoclay used for in drilling fluids?
CP-982 is the primary viscosifier and gellant in oil-based and invert emulsion drilling fluids. It builds yield point and gel strength for cutting transport, suspends barite and other weighting solids when circulation stops, improves fluid loss control, and enhances emulsion stability. Compatible with diesel, mineral oil, crude oil, and synthetic base fluids. Treat rate 5–15 kg/m³. Full OBM application guide →
What base oils is CP-982 compatible with?
CP-982 is compatible with diesel, crude oil, mineral oil, and synthetic base oil used in invert emulsion drilling systems. Effective in all-oil systems, invert emulsion (OBM), workover fluids, completion fluids, casing packs, packer fluids, and spotting fluids. For HTHP wells above 120°C BHT, upgrade to CP-EL or CP-GL HTHP grades.
What is the treat rate of CP-982 in oil-based drilling fluid?
Standard treat rate: 5–8 kg/m³ for light YP (5–10 Pa); 8–12 kg/m³ for standard OBM (YP 10–18 Pa); 12–15 kg/m³ for high-density systems (YP 15–25 Pa). Dosage depends on base oil type, mud weight, and target rheology. Contact our technical team with your well program and target rheology for a specific treat schedule.
