CP-24B Organoclay — Technical Data Sheet

Economical white-powder organophilic clay for low to medium polarity systems. High thixotropy, wide polarity range, reproducible consistency. For alkyd and polyester paints, diesel-based drilling fluids, lubricating greases, and printing inks. Requires polar activator.

CP Organoclay organophilic clay powder — fine powder product for industrial applications
CP-24B is an economical organophilic clay delivering high thixotropy across a wide range of intermediate and low polarity organic solvent systems. White fine powder produces colorless gel with reproducible thixotropic consistency across temperature ranges — suitable for standard-specification industrial coatings, diesel OBM, lubricating greases, and printing inks where cost-effectiveness is the primary selection criterion alongside reliable performance.

Applications and Dosage

ApplicationTypical DosageNotes
Paints (low to medium polarity solvents)0.3–1.0 wt%Alkyd, polyester, aliphatic/aromatic systems
Diesel-based drilling fluid (OBM)5–12 kg/m³Standard diesel OBM viscosifier
Lubricating grease8–15 wt%Economical grease thickener
Printing ink0.5–2.0 wt%Anti-settling, body
Economical Position: CP-24B with LOI <29% is positioned as the lowest organic modifier content — and therefore lowest cost — organoclay grade for standard coating and drilling applications. For applications where maximum gel efficiency is required, upgrade to CP-34 (LOI 28–30% with activation) or CP-APA (LOI 32–35%, self-activating). CP-24B is recommended for cost-sensitive large-volume applications where standard specification performance is sufficient.

Incorporation Method

  1. Charge solvent to mixing vessel
  2. Slowly add CP-24B (8–10% of pre-gel weight) under agitation
  3. Mix at high speed for 5 minutes
  4. Add polar activator: 95% ethanol or methanol at 30–40% of CP-24B weight
  5. Continue high-shear mixing for 5 minutes; rest 10–15 minutes
  6. Incorporate pre-gel into full formulation at required dosage (0.2–2.0%)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CP-24B organoclay used for?
CP-24B is an economical white-powder organoclay for standard-specification applications: paints in low to medium polarity solvents (alkyd, polyester), diesel-based OBM (viscosifier), lubricating greases (thickener), and printing inks (anti-settling, body). LOI <29% provides cost-effective anti-settling, anti-sag, and thixotropy. White powder gives colorless gel suitable for light-tinted formulations. Requires 30–40% polar activator.
How does CP-24B differ from CP-24?
Both CP-24 and CP-24B are economical white-powder grades with LOI <29% and nearly identical bulk density. CP-24 is specifically described as providing "thixotropy with low base viscosity"; CP-24B emphasizes "high thixotropy" and "wide intermediate to low polarity range." Both require 30–40% polar activator and pre-gel procedure. Contact our technical team with your application requirements for a specific recommendation. CP-24 details →
