CP-2 Organophilic Clay — Technical Data Sheet

Amine-treated organophilic bentonite viscosifier for diesel oil-based drilling fluids and invert emulsion systems. Increases cutting carrying capacity, suspends weighting materials, aids fluid loss control and emulsion stability in OBM, workover, and completion fluids.

CP Organoclay organophilic clay powder — fine powder product for industrial applications
CP-2 is an amine-treated organophilic clay for diesel oil-based and invert emulsion drilling fluid applications. The amine surface treatment converts the naturally hydrophilic bentonite clay surface to organophilic — allowing dispersion in diesel and mineral oil rather than water, and enabling the clay platelets to develop yield point and gel structure in oil-continuous drilling fluid systems. CP-2 provides effective rheological support across the range of OBM and completion fluid applications in standard diesel and crude oil base systems.

Grade Selection: CP-2 and CP-982 are equivalent choices for standard diesel and mineral oil OBM. Use CP-992 or CP-31 when working with synthetic base fluids (internal olefins, alpha olefins) or low-BTEX mineral oils requiring rapid yield development with less shear. Use CP-EL or CP-GL for HTHP wells where bottom-hole temperatures exceed 150°C.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CP-2 amine-treated bentonite used for?
CP-2 is used as viscosifier and gellant in diesel oil-based and invert emulsion drilling fluids. Builds yield point and gel strength for cutting transport, suspends barite during circulation stops, aids fluid loss control, and increases emulsion stability. Suitable for OBM, invert emulsion, workover, completion, casing packs, packer fluids, and spotting fluids in diesel, crude, mineral, and synthetic base oils. Full OBM guide →
What is the difference between CP-2 and CP-982?
CP-2 and CP-982 are both organophilic clay viscosifiers for OBM with comparable performance in diesel and mineral oil systems. CP-2 uses amine-based surface treatment; CP-982 uses standard quaternary ammonium treatment. Both meet API 13A criteria. Performance in standard diesel OBM is equivalent. For synthetic base fluids or rapid yield development at lower shear, use CP-992 or CP-31.
