CP-3 Organoclay for Non-Aqueous Drilling Fluids

An economy organophilic bentonite for developing viscosity, carrying capacity and gel structure in qualified non-aqueous drilling-fluid systems.

CP-3 organoclay powder for non-aqueous drilling fluids
CP-3 is a Camp-Shinning alkyl quaternary ammonium bentonite positioned as an economy rheology additive for non-aqueous drilling fluids based on diesel, clean mineral oil or compatible synthetic olefins. It helps formulators develop viscosity, suspension and carrying capacity when the base fluid, emulsifier package and shear conditions are suitable. CP-3 is intended for drilling-fluid laboratories, mud engineers and buyers who will qualify it using the current technical procedure and application-specific rheology tests. The same-company source recommends use where bottom-hole temperature does not exceed 150°C.

What is CP-3 organoclay?

An economy organophilic bentonite for developing viscosity, carrying capacity and gel structure in qualified non-aqueous drilling-fluid systems.

Which applications is CP-3 suitable for?

Application boundary: CP-3 is not a water-based drilling additive and should not be treated as a complete mud system. Review the water-based drilling page for aqueous fluids, and qualify another grade when the temperature or base-fluid requirement falls outside CP-3 data.

How should CP-3 be incorporated?

Use the current CP-3 drilling procedure. The public source supports high-shear incorporation but does not establish one universal field dosage for every mud density, oil/water ratio or base fluid.

  1. Confirm base-oil type, oil/water ratio, emulsifier package, density and target PV, YP and gel strengths.
  2. Add CP-3 at the stage specified in the current formulation while maintaining adequate shear.
  3. Condition or age the complete fluid using the required test protocol.
  4. Compare PV, YP, 10-second and 10-minute gels, electrical stability and filtration against the control.

What operating conditions should be qualified?

The 150°C statement is a recommended bottom-hole temperature boundary from the source. It does not replace API or customer-specific aging, rheology, filtration and electrical-stability testing for the complete fluid.

How does CP-3 compare with related CP grades?

CP-3An economy non-aqueous drilling-fluid trial is needed within the stated temperature boundaryDo not assume a universal dosage or high-temperature qualification
CP-982The current product taxonomy calls for a standard diesel/mineral-oil OBM viscosifierIts positioning and test profile are not identical to CP-3

CP-31Self-activating, lower-shear or cold-climate selection is requiredConfirm activation and temperature data before substitution

Frequently asked questions about CP-3

What is CP-3 organoclay used for?
CP-3 is used as an economy rheology additive in qualified non-aqueous drilling fluids to develop viscosity, suspension and carrying capacity.
Which base fluids can be screened with CP-3?
The same-company source identifies diesel, clean mineral oil and compatible synthetic olefins. Each complete fluid still requires compatibility and performance testing.
What is the recommended CP-3 temperature boundary?
The published recommendation is for bottom-hole temperatures not above 300°F or 150°C. This is an application boundary, not a universal guarantee.
What is the recommended CP-3 dosage?
No universal CP-3 dosage is published on this page because loading depends on base fluid, density, oil/water ratio, emulsifiers and target rheology. Use the current TDS and a controlled laboratory ladder.
Does CP-3 replace emulsifiers or filtration-control additives?
No. CP-3 provides rheology and suspension but is not a complete drilling-fluid package.
Which tests should be used to qualify CP-3?
Evaluate PV, YP, gel strengths, electrical stability and filtration after the required conditioning or aging protocol for the complete fluid.
